UW Science Posse Fellowship Announcement:


UW Science Posse 

WANTED: Ph.D. Students with a Passion for Science and Education.

Applications are now being accepted for the competitive  Science Posse fellowship for the 2010-2011 academic year. These fellowships are awarded to exceptional graduate students in math, science, and engineering fields. The 2010-2011 Science Posse is especially looking for students with expertise in energy and water quality.  The Science Posse is a K-12 science education program funded by the National Science Foundation. The award covers graduate tuition, fees, insurance, and a full-year stipend of $30,000 for full-time Ph.D. students.

Fellows must participate on the project 20 hrs/week.  Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Attending weekly Science Posse meetings;
  2. Participating in training sessions;
  3. Creating and delivering hands-on, inquiry-based lesson plans and presentations for 6th-12th grade students in Wyoming;
  4. Communicating with teachers and traveling to participating schools throughout Wyoming;
  5. Attending and presenting at local and national professional conferences;
  6. Collaborating with local and state science fairs and other science events; and
  7. Coordinating and hosting the Science Posse's Exploring Science Summer Camp for students and Summer Workshop for teachers.

 Applicants must:

  • Be graduate students in a science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) fields Ph.D students are preferred, but MS students will be considered;
  • Commit to a full G.A.;
  • Commit to a full year (September 2010-August 2011);
  • Have a flexible schedule that allows for frequent travel; and
  • Be able to contribute positively to a team environment.

Frequently asked questions:

  • How often should I plan on traveling?  Based on the schedules of the 2010-2011 Fellows, we  will develop travel teams, and you will travel 5-8 times during the semester. (Some trips, depending on distance, take more than 1 day.
  • How would you describe the time commitment? Plan on spending 20 hours a week developing lesson materials, working with students and giving lab tours
  • Are there any other commitments I need to be aware of?  If selected, you will be required to attend the Science Posse's Teacher Workshop to learn about teaching with inquiry August 2-6, and the Science Posse New Fellow Training August 9-13.
